Grady Fess: loyalty in the language of complaints
Grady Fess can turn a routine departure into a warning about weight, a complaint about a drone, and a joke at his captain's expense. He also keeps working. That combination makes him an immediately recognisable presence in Spiral Burn: a capable engineer whose concern rarely arrives in polite wrapping.
Competence without polish
At Dock 47, Grady emerges from beneath a landing strut with grime and coolant on his coveralls. His armour is only partly clipped. An old fusion-wrench strap remains on his wrist. The scene gives him the marks of someone interrupted at work, rather than someone arranged for an introduction.
His warning about the load is equally direct. There are useful systems aboard, but none can make excess mass cease to matter. Grady is willing to tell Elias where the limit lies. The complaint carries practical information; humour does not cancel the warning.
A relationship heard in the replies
Elias's response to Grady is often brief: an eyebrow, a request for a translation, a question about whether he is finished. Grady gives the joke another turn and carries on. Their exchange feels familiar because neither needs to explain the other's manner before answering it.
When Elias asks whether he is done, Grady replies, “Warming up.” Later, the same voice brings a complaint about last-minute cargo over the comms. The work continues through the teasing. The captain can hear the objection and still give an instruction; the engineer can grumble and still act on it.
Care expressed through work
Grady's gruff loyalty and relentless pragmatism have something concrete to do in this early scene. He has overseen most of the upgrades, points out the overload, and stays involved in the departure. His care is visible in what he notices and what he is prepared to say.
That is the appeal of Grady as a character. His dry humour gives the crew a distinctive social rhythm, while his practical judgement keeps the conversation tied to consequences. We learn how he relates to Elias before learning everything about his past.
